Astronaut 1: "wait, it's all NAND gates?"
Astronaut 2: "the following two statements are not both true at once: it is not true that it both has been and still is the case, and it is not true that it both has been and still is the case"

New Police Procedural Idea:

Retired US President (who used to be a neurosurgeon before he became a politician, who used to be a mentalist before he went to university to become a neurosurgeon) helps the FBI solve crime.

Unlike _other_ fictitious non-cop crime consultants, he brings THREE unrelated skill sets to bear upon crime!

...and the most unrealistic thing about this show will still be that the audience is expected to believe that detectives care about solving crime.

Western philosophy

@oddtail So first and foremost, ancient Greek philosophers aren't "western", ancient Greece has nothing to do with "west", that is a post-renaissance appropriation, along with their supposed primacy over other traditions of philosophy. thinking of them as western or white is the usual white anachronism.

secondly, the relevance of ancient greek philosophers and philosophies are historical, esp. in methodologies.

lastly, they were definitely not "straight" by any definition.

Personally, I think capitalism is not poggers.

Does anyone have any good tutorials for learning how to use Emacs from scratch? I am working under the assumption the built in tutorial will not get the job done, but if I am wrong about this do let me know.

Microsoft has asked Lenovo to make it harder to boot Linux on their computers.

obviously I know some really cool people who work at Microsoft but it's very funny to me that people have been harping on us FOSS types for not instantly forgiving them for 20 years of malice, and now we've got this. [1]

when Microsoft is asking manufacturers to prevent people from booting other OSes and not communicating as to why, they are positioning themselves as the enemy. it's that simple. if they want to be trusted by Linux users, they need to earn that trust.

we're about 2y away, by my estimation, from living in a bizarro world where x86 PCs are less open to free desktops than ARM Macs.

Earlier today I said "kill as in UNIX, not kill as in murder", and now I want to make a concept album around that very sentence.

Remember how in The 4400 how the main characters (Who worked for the FBI) were terrified of a radical faction of the people with superpowers saying that they were gonna deal a lethal blow to the FBI's authority?

And they kept broadcasting the threat, promising a massive event on a certain day?

And then the day came and it turns out the radical faction used their powers to create sustainable farmland for any who were hungry?

And the FBI freaked out?

Imagine if YouTube was shut down.

It would be a literal tragedy for the human race. Billions of hours worth of creativity would disappear in an instant.

"That would never happen!" some believe.

But it already has.

Remember Google+? All of it's gone forever.

Or remember all that media stored on MySpace? It's vanished.

We must stop depending on Big Tech to archive our data. Their mandate is to profit off our data, not preserve it.

i think every “free and open source advocate” & “infosec expert” should work at an IT help desk for at least 6 months so they can understand why getting people to “just switch” to whatever privacy-respecting app they’re promoting this week is impractical

@swaggboi I really want a "dumb" appliance store. My fridge should keep things cold, my toaster warm things up, my printer put ink on thin slices of dead tree, and my TV show whatever video stream I send it. None of these need to reach out over the network. Please sell me well made, well functioning, single use devices, that serve their purpose well.
