Follow

FYI for newbies

Twitter has algorithms to get you engaged. Mastodon does not. So in order to enjoy Mastodon you have to take some time to reach out and find content and follow folks that you enjoy. Don't expect Mastodon to send you random popular posts to keep you engaged, you have to curate your own feed. But this is good! It gives you control.

FYI for newbies

Well this post has been lovely but it's time to mute it! :tp_mi: :tp_lape:

FYI for newbies

@vv One of the better things, no hate amplifying algorithm is not a bad thing.

FYI for newbies

@vv kind of exactly why I like it

@vv and this is one of the things I'm in love with 🤩

FYI for newbies

@vv seems like we can't doomscroll like we did on twitter then 😂 (for the good reason!)

FYI for newbies

@fahru
you still can, just go to the instance or global timeline and you will get more content delivered than you possibly could read.
@vv

FYI for newbies

@glowl @fahru yes, depending on the instance you're on at least. On a smaller instance even the global feed will be much less infinite.

FYI for newbies

@vv thanks for this. You're my first ever like on Mastodon!

re: FYI for newbies

@vv that`s why I came here!

FYI for newbies

@vv i am more addicted to fedi because of the connections and friendships i've formed here. it feels way more organic and less corporate (made to keep you engaged) than twitter. love it here!

FYI for newbies

@ConfuSomu @vv Same! Feels like I actually get to connect with people on here. Also I think the lack of corporations + celebrities makes it better too? Like I don’t see shitposting about depressing / annoying billionaire news as much. Feels better + human.

FYI for newbies

@samwightt @ConfuSomu @vv exactly, but not only celebrities, many “twitter stars” thrive on toxic interactions and pointless first-world complains that only foster more shitposting, boosted by the algorithm. I am so happy to have left all that negativity behind :)

FYI for newbies

@vv i actually like how it doesnt spam you with new posts and whatever...

FYI for newbies

@vv I first got onto Mastodon about 4 years ago, and was gratified to not have people I've never heard of and share no interests with me spam-following me, nor see posts totally not related to my interests, appearing in my timeline seemingly by magic, from people I don't follow, nor retweeted by anyone I follow.

@vv As it should be! So thankful for this new network!

FYI for newbies

@vv This really sounds like a breath of fresh air! Happy to have migrated over here. :ablobcatrave:

@vv do you have any advice for finding artists you like on other instances without having to create an account or migrate to that instance?

@Stealcase Hashtags are usually helpful, such as [#] Masto Art (without spaces). In the Advanced interface you can set up a column just for a hashtag. Once you follow enough artists they may share art by others, and that helps you find folks too. You could also always go to the explore tab of another instance (e.g. mastodon.art/explore ) and follow from there.

@vv They can still see everything in the universal feed.

@breaker Yeah, the federated timeline is helpful in many cases, but that will depend on your instance. It only shows posts that your instance knows about -- only posts by users that are being followed by users on your instance. If your instance is on a relay, then it'll also show those posts, which helps a lot. But that still won't get *everything*. And if you're on a single-user instance it's going to look lonely.

@breaker Oh, and posts boosted by your instance's users, too.

FYI for newbies

@vv I think this is one of the best feature of Mastodon. I've been trying it out for a few hours now and it just feels... calm 😌

FYI for newbies

@vv FWIW @FediFollows is a really great starting point!

FYI for newbies

@vv this is such a good statement.

Above all else, Twitter>-Mastodon converts.... Mastodon is NOT Twitter!

FYI for newbies

@vv Your description of how Mastodon works sounds very much like how I use Twitter - everything shown chronologically, 'trending' bar removed and generally avoiding the algorithm...

FYI for newbies

@vv I've been really appreciating all of the tips for newbs (read: me). Mastodon seems to operate basically like Twitter in "Latest" instead of the default "Homepage" mode. Which is kinda what I prefer so not getting bugged down by extra content I didn't ask for is really nice

FYI for newbies

@vv@solarpunk.moe this is the main hump of the learning curve -- it's all you-driven instead of algo-driven

your feed is only really going to contain what you put there for the most part (local/fed aside)
#introduction

FYI for newbies

@vv I both really appreciate this aspect but am also inconvenienced by it. Twitter made it so easy to get started and grow a network of things I want. It also made it easy to find new things I ended up loving. Now I have to sorta do it all manually and just hope I stumble across something new by chance.

FYI for newbies

@vv thanks! That's useful info

@vv and is the best way to have what we really want.

re: FYI for newbies

@vv love this so much I felt the need to share… I think that’s what I’m doing lol

re: FYI for newbies

@vv This is mostly an improvement on Twitter if you ask me, a lot of it's suggested posts drive me mad! Like 1 in 50 I actually fine interesting, the rest I find usually mildly annoying, esp when my feed is FULL of them.

FYI for newbies

@vv @meow_factor I spent twelve years on Twitter and did not use algorithms to find followers. I used full text (not hashtag) searches to find people. I browsed my mutuals’ lists of followers, not just those of a de facto siloed server. I could read anyone’s posts to identify interesting people, not the cataract of a federated timeline or the landlocked pool of a local one. I get that the fediverse is not Twitter, but finding followers is slow and awkward, and trying to make a virtue of a poorly designed UX just feels smug to me.
